She was born to the late John A. McCall Sr. and Lucile Buchanan McCall on March 3, 1932. She was a lifetime member of Rock Spring Presbyterian Church, taught at Meadowview school for 25 years, was a member of the Oak Hill Extension Homemakers Club for over 60 years, served on the board and volunteered at the Washington County Fair for over 40 years, served with Washington County 4-H Clubs for over 50 years, and was a charter board member of the Washington County United Way. Alberta was known for her cookies having served them in her home, at local functions, and worldwide. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Ernest E. Copenhaver; daughter, Susie C. Lang; and brother, John A. | 13 | Andy Widener Obituary Andy J. Widener, 74, of Fulton, died on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Eagle Point Health Care Center of Clinton, IA after a 2 year battle with cancer. He was born on April 9, 1949 in Straight Creek, KY, the son of Andy and Magdalene (Haley) Widener. He married Annette Rosenow on June 17, 1972 in Morrison. Andy was a veteran of the U.S. Army and both the Iowa and Illinois Army National Guard. Andy was a truck driver for E.H. Stralow Trucking of Morrison and later managed the Equal service station in Morrison for Gibson Oil. Andy retired as a Police Officer for the City of Morrison after serving his community for 28 years. Andy was also an avid golfer, fisherman, and woodworker. He enjoyed going to estate sales and auctions. Andy spent most of his retired years as a snowbird in Florida with his loving wife by his side. He is survived by his wife, Annette Widener of Fulton; two daughters, Jennifer (Andrew) Trello of Springfield, IL, Samantha Widener-Ende of Morrison; one sister, Judy Dietz of Decatur, IL; one brother, Mark (Sherry) Widener of Fulton; one aunt, Sue Nunn of KY; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. His will, recorded in Washington County, Virginia, left Ann $50 which was to be paid by her brother Robert in items for her support.1 Court Record 1833 John Larimer's estate was settled in 1833. Court documents show an entry dated November 1832 whereby the estate was charged with the cost of defending a suit brought in Chancery by Samuel McGinnis "committee for Ann Larimemememer a dumb daughter of the testator."3 Ann died in Washington County, Virginia, probably in May 1859 (abstracted county death register). However her name also appears on the 1860 Federal census mortality schedule. She should not have been listed unless she died in May 1860 since the instructions were to supply death information for the 12 months ending June 1, 1860. Pleasant, SC, died January 13, 2012. He was a native of Washington County, Virginia. In 1940, Wayne moved with his new wife, Velma, to Charlotte, NC, where he was credit and collection manager for the CIT Corporation. He lived there for three years and then moved to Greenville, SC, where he began working in the automobile auction business. Wayne, Velma and their family moved back to Abingdon in 1946. Wayne was a real estate and tobacco auctioneer and served as Supervisor of Sales for the Abingdon tobacco market for three years. He started his automobile auction company in Bristol, TN. When he sold the business, he formed a real estate auction. This company conducted auction sales in three states before Wayne retired several years later. He was also a builder and real estate developer, and he developed three of Abingdon's subdivisions. Wayne was always interested in church, civic and community affairs. He was past president of Abingdon Civitan Club, was a charter member of Glenrochie Country Club, where he served on the board of directors for several years, and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Abingdon. After retirement, Wayne and Velma moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC. Velma preceded Wayne in death in 2005. He was living at Franke at Seaside, a Lutheran Retirement Community, when he died. Wayne is survived by a brother, Leo Powers of Glade Spring, VA; a daughter, Kitti Mullins and her husband Mike Mullins of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and a son, Roger W. Powers, Jr. and his wife Ronna Powers of Carrollton, TX. She was a graduate of Albany R-III High School, and lived most of her life in Stanberry, MO; before moving to St. Joseph in 2003. Mrs. Widener had most recently worked and enjoyed her job as a pharmacy tech at Wal-Mart. GayE was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed reading, bowling, visiting with her neighbors and always loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. GayE married William Clinton Widener on May 2, 1959 in Reno, Nevada. He preceded her in death on March 1, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Rose, Levon, Jackie and Betty. Leo A. Wiley, pastor, officiating. Spring burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery. Mr. Colombo died Sunday in Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, where he had been a patient since Feb. 11. Mr. Colombo retired from Latex Fiber Industries, Beaver Falls. He attended St. Stephen's Church, was a member of McDonald's Breakfast Group, Lowville, which met almost daily for the past 10 years, and was a lifelong Democrat. Born Feb. 28, 1913, in Wheeler, Ky., son of Francisco and Maria Rigney Fillippini Colombo, he attended school in Liggett, Ky. He went to work in 1925 at the company general store in Liggett and in 1929 in the coal mines at Harlan, Ky. He moved with his family in the early 1930s to Lewis County, where they built a home and farm on Artz Road. In the late 1930s, he dug by hand the cellar of their house and then for many years operated and managed the family farm. He married Theresa M. Generous on Jan. 1, 1940, at St. Peter's Church, Lowville. She died Nov. 27. In 1936, he went to work for UniRoyal, later Latex Fiber Industries. He was eventually in charge of training new employees in the stock-materials preparation department. He became a shift foreman and beater room engineer, retiring in September 1978 as a supervisor after 41 years of service. During his employment at Latex Fiber Industries, he was instrumental in bringing in the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers Union, which was affiliated with the AFL-CIO and of which he was president. He received the 1964 Latex Fiber Industries Man of the Year Award. Also, for many years, he and his brother, Eatro "Tory," operated Colombo TV Sales and Service, where they sold and serviced Zenith televisions and equipment. He enjoyed Grand Prix auto racing and traveling with his wife to Oswego as fans of super-modified sports car racing. He also enjoyed caring for and feeding stray animals, politics and reading. The funeral for Eatro E. "Tory" Colombo, 91, of 8613 Artz Road, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, with the Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, pastor of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Croghan, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Croghan. He died Thursday at his home, where he was under the care of his family and Lewis County Hospice. He had been in failing health for two years. Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. He worked for the former Boise Cascade in Beaver Falls, retiring in the 1980s after 50 years of service, and also co-owned and operated Colombo TV Sales and Service in Castorland with his late brother, Joseph. He was a former member of the International Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers Union and enjoyed cars, drag racing at Esta Race Track in Cicero during his younger years. He also enjoyed caring for animals and discussing politics. Born Jan. 11, 1917, in Gatliff, Ky., son of Francisco "Frank" and Mary Fillippini Colombo, he grew up in the mountains of Kentucky, moving with his family to Beaver Falls, where they purchased a farm on Artz Road. He attended school in Kentucky and Beaver River Central School, Beaver Falls. He entered the Army Air Forces on June 3, 1941, serving during World War II with the 347th AAFBU Squadron D as a gunner, flying A-20 bombers on reconnaissance submarine patrols along the eastern coast of the United States. He was honorably discharged as a corporal on Nov. 28, 1944, from Key Field, Miss. He married Evelyn E. Beddingfield on June 15, 1944, in Laurel, Miss. Surviving besides his wife are a son and his wife, Michael and Kathleen, Beaver Falls; three grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, a great-granddaughter, two step-great-grandsons, a step-great-granddaughter, nieces and nephews. Besides his brother, a sister, Carolina "Lena" Maciejko, died before him, on Sept. 10. A Godly woman, Druscilla was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. For 42 years, she worked as an educator in the Knox County School System as both a teacher and librarian. She enjoyed flower gardening, and, according to her family, could make anything grow, “even a stump.” In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Rufus Higgins; her second husband, Roy Cecil Woolum; her daughter, Teena Wells; and two brothers: Deco Farris and James Farris. She leaves behind her daughter, LaVetta Mahan; son, Rufus D. Higgins and wife Thelma; son-in-law, Troy Wells; grandchildren: Mike Mahan and wife, Robin, Karen Garland, Rebecca Stewart and husband Tommy, Elizabeth Stewart and husband James, Rachel Witkoski and husband Patrick, Arlinda Henry and husband Ken, Deidre Higgins, and Deron Higgins; great-grandchildren: Ryan Mahan, Derek Mahan and wife Maggie, Jordan Smith, Chandler Stewart, Kaiti Garland, Kami Garland, Shelby Stewart, Bailey Stewart, Carter Stewart, Kendale Wilson, and Caroline Witkoski; sister, Trevella Hodge, and brother, Jimmy Farris and wife Joyce. Edna was born in Ashland, Oregon and into a ranching family, growing up she spent countless hours in the Southern Oregon mountains riding her horse with her dogs as her companions. After graduating from Ashland High School Edna met her future husband, Robert "Pete" T. Rosenbaum, Sr. They were married in Reno, Nevada, in 1940. In 1941 the happy couple welcomed their only son into their life, Robert T. Rosenbaum, Jr. Edna and Robert Sr. continued the family ranching in Ashland, Oregon on Edna's parents' ranches while Pete worked in the local sawmills. Upon Robert Jr. reaching graduation and taking over a family ranch in Powell Butte, Oregon, Edna decided to expand her future by going back and getting her teacher's degree at Southern Oregon College, in Ashland, Oregon. Edna stayed with her parents in one of their homes while Pete continued his work in the sawmills. Robert Jr. and his wife Darlene were married and ranched a few years in Powell Butte, Oregon before starting their family. Three wonderful granddaughters were born, Rhonda Meyer, Brenda Beem, and Teresa Plank. Upon graduating Edna and Pete moved to Potter Valley, California, where Edna began her 18 year teaching career at Potter Valley and Ukiah, California. Pete became a sawyer at the local saw mill and both Edna and Pete retired there. At that time, Edna and Pete moved to Kuna, Idaho to be closer to their son and family. Pete passed away a few months after the move and Edna's faith helped her to reach out and gain wonderful friends in the Presbyterian Church in Nampa. Edna also became extremely involved with many garden and flower clubs in the Nampa area. Edna's yard, was and still is a testimonial to Edna's green thumb. She had a passion for creating beautiful landscapes, gardening, and enjoyed creating hybrid iris. She met many wonderful people in the garden clubs that she attended and in the community. She had lived in Pocahontas for many years prior to moving to Washington County in 1991. She was of the Baptist Faith. Ernest was past president of Big M Farm Services, served as the past president of Virginia Cattleman's Association, past board member of the National Cattleman's Beef Association, past president of Abingdon Feeder Cattle Association, past board member of the Virginia Cattleman's Industry Board and was a charter member of the Virginia Cattle Foundation Board. Mr. Copenhaver received the Virginia Cattleman of the year award in 1988, Virginia Cattle Industry Service Award in 1996 and the Sunbelt Expo Virginia Farmer of the year in 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents, Steward and Goldie Neese Copenhaver. Childress, son of Mitchell and Rachel (Hendrix) Childress, moved from Knox Co, TN to Jackson County, AL when he was about 21 years of age. WHY??? John K. Childress purchased 80 acres of prime land in Jackson Co, AL in 1836; therefore, he must have received an advance on his inheritance from Mitchell and Rachel Childress before he left E. Tennessee and headed for North Alabama. John K. Childress served in the Creek Indian War from June 14, 1836, until Aug 17, 1836, and served in the Cherokee Removal in 1838. Both times he volunteered for military service in Jackson Co, AL. Much of his personal vitae has been obtained from his bounty land and pension applications based on his 1836 and 1838 military service record. He was well educated, taught school, served as a school and church trustee, and was elected and served as Justice of the Peace in Jackson Co, AL for a number of years. He must have placed a great emphasis on classical education, as all his children were well educated for this locale and period of time. This is considered an important factor, as very little emphasis was placed on education in this area immediately after the Civil War. Civil War destruction and reconstruction both took a heavy toll on family finances. Due to necessity, most families' primary goal was survival and the rebuilding of family farms. There were no public schools, and education came at a great price and sacrifice of what little income the families were able to eke out of the good earth. | 127 | It took from early May to middle October to make the complete journey from the villages of Germany to the shores of America. The trip was a long, hard journey which took a huge toll of the immigrants, mostly children. George Michael Eller came over on the ship "Phoenix" in 1743, and took his oath of allegiance on October 1743.The trip consisted of three parts: the journey from their village to the port of departure, usually in Rotterdam; the ocean voyage to aanother port in England; and the final ocean journey to America. It took approximately five to six weeks for the trip from their village to the port of Rotterdam, because they had about 26 custom houses to stop at on the way up to the coast. They had to stop for a few days at each custom house while the ships were being examined. Most of the emigrants money was spent just getting to Rotterdam, with the biggest share of the journey still ahead of them. The second part of their journey was from Rotterdam to the final port of departure, usually in England. They were delayed here sometimes for weeks waiting for good winds and the countless inspections of their ships. The third and final part of their voyage was the trip across the ocean lasting from 7-12 weeks. The people were packed into the ships as tightly as possible. Most slept on deck. There was a lack of proper food and water was contaminated. Diseases and fever, dysentery, typhoid, and smallpox were widespread, and the children were the first to die. The ships were infested with rats, who ate what little food there was and helped to spread the diseases further. There were frequent storms which lasted days and nights at a time, and many people were washed overboard. There was also a fear of being captured by pirates and hauled off to be sold as slaves in some other part of the world. When at last the travelers reached the Delaware River with America in sight, they had still another wait, while the ships were once again examined. If disease was discovered among the people, the ship was put out at sea one mile till all signs of the infection were gone. After docking again, the immigrants were marched down to the City Hall where they gave their oaths of allegiance. This allegiance was forced upon them by the Governors of Pennsylvania whereby they had to denounce the German Princes and place their loyalties with the Governing Body of Pennsylvania. The Immigrants were once again returned to their ships where they were put up for sale. Those who were very rich paid their passage and were immediately set free. The other immigrants were bought and placed into slavery for a period of 4-7 years in order to pay their passage over. This was called the "Redeemtionary System". After this period of enslavement was served, the immigrants were freed and given "Freedom Dues" which were usually a few articles of clothing, and either a parcel of land, or some livestock. Marriage was only allowed when a payment of a goodly sum was made during these years of service, so most waited till their time was served before they married. Most of these "Immigrant Slaves" were treated fairly in exchange for good hard labor There were many reasons why the Eller Family decided to leave their homeland to come to America. Excessive taxes were being placed upon them by the German Princes in order that they might build magnificent palaces and gardens like those of the FFrench Courts. The Thirty-Years War had left their land devastated, and the political and economic collapse of their Government followed close behind. Famines only added to their already endless burdens and left the land barren. The colonial land agents and ships companies thought it was a good time to encourage these beaten, bitter people to come to America, and propaganda was distributed throughout Germany. William Penn, who had been granted a large tract of land by King Charles II oof England as a payment of a family debt, was the most influential person in getting the German people to leave their homeland. His promise of complete religious freedom for everyone without government intervention, along with free grants of land to settlers who would live and work on the land for a certain number of years brought the German immigrants to America by the thousands to settle in Pennsylvania.George Michael Eller was granted 25 acres of land in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on April 2, 1753. He later settled in Frederick County, Maryland, when he purchased a section of land called "Hammond's Strife", on April 14, 1773. This is recorded in Deed books, pp 96-98. This section of land contained 100 acres and bordered Little Pipe Creek which formed the border between Frederick and Carrol Counties. Joyce went on to pursue her education at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and obtained her bachelor and master's degree in social welfare. She loved being able to hear her client's stories and help them through difficult times and greatllly enjoyed her work as a psychotherapist at Transformations Inc., in Milwaukee, WI. It was during her time at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee that she met her second husband, Donald Jack Mueller. Joyce and Don were married on December 20, 1984 in Sheboygan, WI. Joyce and Don built a home together and lived at High Wind in Plymouth, WI for many years. She remained Donald's faithful companion until his unexpected death on May 24, 1994. After Don's death, Joyce relocated to Dane County to be closer to her children and grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. Joyce was always patient and kind. She would routinely ask others about themselves and was more interested in being a good listener than talking about herself. Joyce is preceded in death by her father, her mother, and her husband, Donald J. Mueller. On October 12, 1952, she married Reverend George Schooler, they enjoyed 44 years together until his passing in 1997. Lena was a long-standing member of Graceway Baptist Churcrch in Ypsilanti, Michigan. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She enjoyed quilting, needlepoint, and crocheting. Lena and George raised two loving children, daughter Rhonda (William Caldwell) Schoolerr, and son George (Betsy) Schooler. Her survivors also include: grandchildren, Tonya (Douglas) Paschall, Hannah (Zach) Ray and Joshua Schooler and great grandchildren Andrew, Emily and Brent. Margaret was born in Bristol, Tennessee on March 16, 1916 to Mai Greever and James C. Boy. A graduate of Virginia Intermont College, she taught school until retiring in the early 1990's. Margaret was a loving and devoted wife to Cecil. Married in 1943, they lived in Bristol TN whwwwhile he served in The U.S. Army. Cecil's career took them to Birmingham, Memphis, then to Metairie in 1962 where they settled with their three children. Born of Lutheran heritage, Margaret was a woman of deep faith. She and Cecil served the Lord joyfully together as members of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in New Orleans. Margaret happily celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at a party held just three days before her death. She passed awaway peacefully on her birthday with family by her side. Gordon, born in Washington County, Virginia on 19 October, 1922, was one of a big family (ten kids) who farmed in parts of Washington and Smyth County for years, He loved his garden and was a very good cook. He was always cooking some type of special pie to bring to family gatherings or to church. His deep faith was a large part of what made him the special person we all came to know and love. He worked for the Brunswick Defense Plant in Marion , VA for many years and remained an active part of the ?Brunswick Breakfast? Group after his retirement. A veteran of World War II, he was a Staff-Sgt in the 247th, General Patton?s Third Army. He was part of the unit that kept the front lines supplied with ammunition. Proud to have served his country in WWII, he made it his goal to sing the Natioional Anthem and Star Spangled Banner at every event he could in order to ?help people learn about and remember all the sacrifices that are made by our military to help keep our great country free.? He was a Lifetime member of the VFW, Post 466767, and regularly attended their gatherings as long as his health allowed. He made the trip with the Honor Flight that takes veterans to Washington, D.C. each year. When he took the trip to the WWII Veterans Memorial in Bedford, VA, he sang the National Anthem for the group that made that trip possible. Because of his efforts to strengthen American patriotism he was invited to sing at many venues, to list just a few, PBS? Song of the Mountains; NHRA Nationals, at Bristol Thunder Valley Dragway; the Memorial Day observance at the Lincoln Theateeer in Marion, VA; Wytheville Community College?s Memorial Day Appreciation of Veterans service ; Bristol?s Ball Park where he had the honor of singing the National Anthem for the opening of the game on several occasions. But his favorite journey was one we made every fall for quiet a few years, across the mountain to the elementary and middle schools in Rich Valley, VA. They do a Veterans Day celebration and have a very nice program to honor the Vets. One young man there, Chaz Cassell, was such a dear friend to Gordon and always ate lunch with him and talked with him about his time in the military. Chaz?s respect for his service was such a neat thing to experience. That always made it such a special day for Gordon, he loved helping the young people understand what a great county they live in. | 170 | Obituary Ernest ?Ernie? Harry Grubb, 90, resident of The Renaissance husband of Ann Gilchrist Grubb went to be with his Lord Friday Nov. 29, 2019. Ernest was the third child born to Burris Stanley Grubb and Leta Earnestine Griffith on a farm in the Rocklane Community, Johnson County, Indiana. He attended Clark Township High School and assisted his father in the operation of their farm.eed money to attend Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana by growing and selling tomatoes to an Indianapolis Farmers? Market. When one summer yielded a bumper crop, he was forced to hire his sisters and friends to pick tomatoes, paying them 10 cents per hamper. At age 16, Ernie enrolled in Franklin College. His classmates were primarily veterans returning from WW II. He credited much of his work ethic with that experience, describing these older students as ?working hard and playing hard when theirsre through.? Sports writers in the area dubbed Ernest ?Ernie? as they reported his excellent performance on the Franklin ?Grizzlies? Basketball Team. Ernie was inducted into the US Army in 1951 while teaching at the Spartanburg High School in Spartanburg, IN. An earlier back injury caused him to be given an honorable discharge early in his military career. He returned to Indiana to find ng jobs available, however a friend in South Georgia contacted him about an opening in a high school in Nahunta, GA. Later he accepted a teaching and coaching position in Coffee County, GA. Ernie remained in the Coffee County area for 25 years, teaching and coaching for most of that time. He served as Dean of Boys at Coffee County High School 1959-1963. In 1963 Ernie was named Coach of the Year by the Georgia State Athletic Ass. During his time in Coffee County, he coached future touring golf professional Larry Hinson, and later enjoyed Hinson?s invitations to walk with him on some of his matches. Later in 1963, Ernie left the education field to join Fleetwood Enterprises, a nationally known builder of manufactured homes. He served as sales manager at the Douglas, GA Fleetwood plant and later was promoted to General Manager of the plancb, IL. Returning to South Georgia, Ernie ran a Goodyear Store in Douglas for some time after leaving Fleetwood. In 1963 Ernie married Gloria Hall Davis and adopted her two sons, Brantley age 3 and Michael 18 months. In 1965 their son, Stanley was born. The couple later divorced and Ernie returned to Indiana to live with his parents and help his mothereris invalid father. During this time he worked in retail sales and management. Mutual friends introduced Ernie to a teacher at Indiana School for the Deaf. Ann and Ernie were married in 1977. Ann had 2 foster daughters, Pauline and Margie, who were sisters, both deaf. With influence from Ann and the girls, Ernie returnolge at Ball State University in Muncie, IN, and earned a Masters Degree in Deaf Education. He took a position as high school history and social science teacher at the school, and worked as assistant football coach under Coach Lynn Frye. After Frye left to go into the business world, Ernie became head coach of the ISD team. Ernie?s ISD football team won the National Championship among schools for the deaf in both 1982 and 1983. The couple retired from ISD in 1989 and relocated in Hendersonville, NC. After 25 years there, Ernie?s health issues sent them in search of a retirement facility where assisted living was available when he needed it. After a brief stay in Greeille, SC, they moved to another facility in Anderson, SC. There they became close friends with Susan Jackson, the marketing director there. When Susan accepted a position in Due West, Ann and Ernie followed her to The Renaissance Retirement where they have lived for 6 years. Ernie and Ann have enjoyed singing Southern Gospel music together wherever they have attended church and in the retirement facility. They have been deeply involved in the Erskine College Ladies? Tennis Team?s Grandparent program, and have ses?Grandparents? to 3 young ladies, all from distant homes?Mikaela Bennett of Calgary, Canada, Marie Berghaus of Cologne, Germany and Luiza Souza of Brazil. Ernie enjoyed attending the ladies? practice sessions until his eyesight prevented him from following the ball. He has encouraged and ?coached? the ladies from the sidelines. At the Sports Awards Ceremony at Erskine College in the spring of 2019, the team awarded him with the first ?Ernie Grubb Fleety Award?. This award is to be handed down to an outstanding individual in Erskine?s Sports Program each year. As new residents moved into The Renaissance, Susan Jackson would ask them to make a ?Senior Wish? which she then would do all she could to fulfill. Ernie?s wish was to coach another championship football team, so Susan and Ann went to work toehis wish made possible. In 2015 former football players from Ernie?s teams were contacted and a weekend ?reunion? was planned. Susan and Ann anticipated 5 or 6 men might make the trip to Due West. The men spread the word to the deaf community and a total of 29 of Ernie?s former players, 2 former cheerleaders, 3 retired teachers, his former head coach, Lynn Frye and a few wives and children descended on our little community to honor the coach! On Saturday morning the team had a ?scrimmage? with the local fire fighters as their opponents. The official for the game was former Due West mayor Lee Logan. At a banquet in his honor, nearly every former player stood to thank Ernie for the influence he had been on their lives as adults. Nothing could have pleased Ernie more. He loved influencing young people to become responsible useful citizens. Ernie is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Gilchrist Grubb; sons Michael Stuart and Ernest Stanley Grubb of Mesa, AZ, a special friend whom he loved like a daughter Susan Jackson and several nieces and nephews. | 178 | Obituary for MARY M WIDENER Mary M. Widener, 74 of Cincinnati, OH went to be with the Lord on March 16, 2020. She was born December 15, 1945 in Straight Creek, KY, the youngest Daughter of the late Myrtle and Henry Widener. She was the youngest of 13 children. Mary was much loved by her family and her loving caregivers and friends at Beechwood Home where she was a resident for 47 years. She moved into the Beechwood Home in October of 1972 and became family to the staff and other residents. Mary was fond of playining cards, supervising the receptionists, fasting lunches on Tuesdays and ordering fried chicken out on Tuesday nights. She loved strawberry milkshakes, playing Bingo and talking "common sense philosophy" with "sensible people". She loved playinng Black Jack and Bingo with her volunteer friends. She also loved going to the horse races and enjoyed a camping trip with some of the other residents and staff members of Beechwood. Her smile was infectious, but you also didn't want to make her mad. She was small but mighty! She had many amazing friendships with staff and other residents. But more than anything she enjoyed being with her very large family. She looked forward to attending the annual Widener family reunion every July. She always responded with a huge Mary Widener smile when staff checked in with her about the reuninion on the following Monday morning. To know Mary is to love her. She always had a big smile on her face and no matter what was going on in the rest of the world, she was happy. Though she was non-verbal, she taught us all so much. She showed us that beauty is on the inside. To listen to more than just words, to actually listen, to hear what people are saying and try to understand it. To stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves and always take care of family. To have a seense of humor and a compassionate heart. To always wear a smile and to Love! And yes, that Widener stubbornness as well. Mary is survived by too many Nieces and Nephews to count. She was a very special Aunt to all of us. She was preceded in death by her Parents Henry and Myrtle Widener; Brothers: Ralph, Corum, Jay, Ken, Curtis, Okes and Loy. Sisters: Anna, Aggie, Lucy, Minnie and Sarah. | 181 | oseph Cole, II was the son of Joseph Cole, I and Freelove Mason. He married Remember Cole 26 November 1769. Remember was the daughter of Israel Cole and Remember Burgess. Remember died and Joseph later married Margaret Leeper in 1777. Joseph enlisted in the Virginia Militia. He was a Captain and fought in the battle of Kings Mountain. His tombstone was recorded by Redmond Cole circa 1926. Since that time, his tombstone has been destroyed or missing. A gravemarker was placed in the Cemetery at St. Clair's Bottom Primitive Baptist Cemetery by Dennis Stewart 27 September 2005. Dennis ordered this military marker at no cost from the US government. A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, 27 September 2005 at 4:00 PM. Betty O'Brien, of SC, a member of Nathanael Greene Chapter DAR, researched the biography and read it at the service. Betty also lead the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the USA. Dennis Stewart of TN, a member of Col. Benjamin Cleveland Chapter SAR, presented the colors, unveiled the marker, layed the wreath, and retired the colors. The invocation and prayer were done by Rev. Zeb Carson Williams, Jr., of VA. All participants sang The Star Spangled Banner. Betty is a 5th great-grand niece of Joseph Cole. Dennis and Zeb are 5th great-grandnephews of Joseph Cole. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army and was a retired truck driver from R & B Trucking. He was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Widener was a native of Washington County and had lived in Pocahontas for 33 years before returning to Damascus in 1991. He retired from American Electric Power Company in 1995, was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion. He was of the Methodist faith. She was an active member of Mahanaim United Methodist Church for many years where she served in various roles including a United Methodist Youth Fellowship leader. After living in Abingdon, Virginia for several years, she moved to Roanoke, Virginia to be near family. She was a current member of Abingdon United Methodist Church. Katherine was a former employee of the US Gypsum Commissary and after a few years as a stay at home Mom, she completed a Cosmetology program at Washington County Technical School. She established and worked in her own beauty shop for several years. She also worked many years fos for Washington County, retiring from the Commissioner of the Revenue office. A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville, Va., with the Rev. Barry Loupe officiating. She proceeded him in death on April 1, 2006. He served in the U.S. Army from 1948 - 1953. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and family. | 195 | Robert Larimer was born in Virginia circa 1790.3,4 Marriage 6 Dec 1810 He married Sally McKee on 6 Dec 1810 in Washington County, Virginia.5 The correct spelling of Sally's last name is not clear to me at this time. The abstracted marriage record spells it McReed. However a letter written by Sally's great granddaughter to Judge Redmond Cole states that Sally's surname was McKee. It might also be noted that the 1820 census for Washington County lists several McKee households but none for the surname McReed or McRead.6 Land-Buy 18 Jun 1816. On 18 Jun 1816 Robert appears to have purchased 2 tracts of land from his father [the deed was from John Larimer Sr. to Robert Larimer but no relationship was stated]. The larger of the two contained 174 acres; Robert paid $400 for it. The sale exempted the old house which was to remain in John's possession. Jane [John's estranged wife] was not included on the deed [at John's death she sued for her dower share].7 Cens-Sum Although the census records prior to 1850 only list the head of the household by name, some information can be inferred from the tally marks in the various age columns. Robert appears as the head of a Washington County household in al all 3 census years available for the county prior to 1850. In 1820 his household included 4 males under the age of 10 which would be consistent with Robert's first 4 known sons: Andrew, William, John and James. Robert would have been representnteted a as the male age 26 to 45. However 3 females under 10 are also listed. One was probably daughter Jane. Who were the others? Did Sally have 7 children between 1811 and 1820 or were there other young relatives in the household? Also present in 182820 were 2 females aged 26-45. One no doubt represented Sally. The other female was probably Robert's unmarried sister Ann. The household also included a female over 45 who was most likely Robert's mother. She and Robert's father John Larimer did not live together and John's will specified that he had assisted his sons John and Robert in caring for their mother. By 1830 7 males under 20 were listed in Robert's household. They appear to match the expected ages for his known sons: Andrew, William, John, James, Isaac, Robert and Samuel. Five females under 20 were tallied. One likely represented Robert's daughter Jane. But who were the others? Two females age 30 to 40 were also listed. Presumably one was Robert's wife and the other was most likely his sister Ann. In addition Robert's mother was again most likely represented by the tally in the 80-90 year old female column. Robert's 1840 household included 2 males age 5 to 10 that I cannot account for. Other tally marks appear to represent sons James, Isaac, Robert and Samuel. Robert's 3 older sons (Andrew, John and William) were enumerated as heads of their own hoouseholds in 1840. Jane Larimer [Robert's mother] was also enumerated as the head of a household in 1840. She was aged 90-100. A 40 to 50 year old female was tallied with her, no doubt representing her daughter Ann. And as might then be expected, Robert's household does not include an older woman in 1840. And it includes just one female in the 40-50 year old age range, presumably Robert's wife. The enumeration also includes 2 females aged 20 to 30; one would be Robert's daughter Jane who did not marry until 1847. Did Robert also have a daughter Margaret? The Washington County marriage records include the marriage of a Margaret Larimer to a David Denton in 1847.8,9,10 Marriage 18 Jul 1847 He married Rachel Debusk on 18 Jul 1847 in Johnson County, Tennessee.11 Cens-1850 13 Sep 1850 Robert and Rachel were enumerated in Washington County, Virginia, when the first census to list all members of a household was recorded. Robert was listed as a 60 year old farmer who owned land valued at $1,600. Rachel was 20. Also living in the household were: Samuel 21, Ann 14, Roulen [probably Paulser] 2 and Christopher, 8 months.4 Samuel was Robert's son from his first marriage. Ann may have been the daughter of Robert's son Andrew who had died the previous year (although Ann appears to have also been enumerated in her stepfather's household). The 1840 census tally dt Robert himself had a daughter in this age range. Living 1 household away was Robert E. Larimer [Robert's son from his first marriage] And not far away was James Larimer [another son from Robert's first marriage]. Robert and Rachel may have also had a son David, born around 1851, who died of scarlet fever in January, 1858 or January 1860. It is also possible, though less likely, that David was the son of Robert's son Robert from his first marriage. Rlear to have also had a son Andrew who was born about 1853 and died in 1855. He may have been named in memory of Robert's older son Andrew who died about 1849.12,13 Cens-1860 9 Aug 1860 Ten years later Robert and Rachel were again enumerated on the Washington County census. Robert, now 70, stated that his land was worth $4,000 and his personal property was valued at $2,000. In addition to Rachel, now 30, the family included 4 children: Paulser, Christopher, Sallie [Sarah] and 2 year old Virginia.14 Robert and Rachel also had at least 1 and probably 2 additional children after the 1860 enumeration. Death 8 Jun 1875 Robert died on 8 Jun 1875.3 Burial He was buried at Rock Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.3 Will-Recd 28 Jun 1875 Robert's will was recorded on 28 Jun 1875 in Washington County. He left the bulk of his estate to Rachel, as long as she remained his widow. Robert also left $1 to each of the children by his first wife, but did not name t the children. He also left $1 to "daughter Jane Widener by my last wife". Robert noted that they had already received their share. Following Rachel's death Robert's land was to be divided among his 4 sons: Palser, Christopher, Charlie and Emett. He also left daughter Sally a horse, saddle and bridle.15 Probate Recd 29 Nov 1877 Settlement papers for Robert's estate were recorded in late 1877. Equal payments of $1 were made to: T. J. Roger was a coal truck driver, attended the Ages Mountain Assembly Church of God, and loved old cars. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jacqueline Rigney Shell and Ernest Shell. Survivors include his wife, Kathy Ledford Shell, Ages; six children, Roger Shell, Ages; Crystal Moore, Brittains Creek; Penny Ledford, Ages; Tammy Ledford, Baxter; Rodney Ledford, Baxter; and Dennis Ledford, Ages; one brother, Stevie ?Mack? Shell, Ages; six sisters, Brenda Reddington, Evarts; Faye Riggs, Middlesboro; Cathy Cole, Ages; Sheila Tarter, Jonesville, VA; Lisa Wells, Jonesville, VA; and Debbie Webb, Jonesville, VA. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends. Visitation will be held Saturday after 2 PM at the Ages Mountain Assembly Church of God. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, November 30, 2014, at 2 PM at the Ages Mountain Assembly Church of God with the Reverend Donnie Harrison officiating. She was a sales clerk for LS Ayers for 17 years retiring in 1973. She was also a salesperson for Avoooon where she and earned the Presidents Club award. Ruth was active in the PTA and was past president. She was a member of Westview Baptist Church in Indianapolis, where she held various offices in the church as well as being their organist for 45 years. She is survived by her husband, John Fred Schooler; her children, Donna Simmons, Joan (Roger) Ridenour, and John "Rick" (Cindy) Schooler; a brother, Robert (Louise) Benge; a half-sister, Opal Lambdin; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, February 16, 2013 in the Westview Baptist Church, 2025 Westview Dr. (corner of Belmont and Morris St.) in Indianapolis, IN 46221, where friends may call at the church on Friday, February 15 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. She was born August 12, 1936 in Clinton. She lived in Summerville, South Carolina for 12 years and retired from Summerville Dress Factory where she worked as a clothing inspector. She was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Oliver Springs. Preceded in death by parents, Pettibone and Marie Rigney Mitchell; four sisters and seven brothers. Ruth is survived by her husband, John Lawson; by sons, Roger Lawson and wife Gladys of Oak Ridge, Scott Lawson and wife Marivic of Karns; by three grandchildren, Kendrick Lee, Kyshana Faye and Tristan. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 1, 2019 between the hours of 5:00pm ? 7:00pm at Premier Sharp Funeral Home with funeral service following at 7:00pm in the chapel with Pastor Garvan Walls officiating.
